VPS Hosting & Dedicated Server Questions Answered!
What is a Dedicated Server?
A Dedicated Server is a hosting setup that gives you the ultimate flexibility and control of your website and applications as your servers are on your own dedicated system (unlike VPS Hosting). These plans are highly customizable with full root access.
Do I Need VPS or Dedicated Hosting?
If you are currently on a shared hosting plan, you are limited by the plans and platform we have put together in our plans. Upgrading to a Virtual Private Server gives you the ability to customize your configuration in a way that best suits your needs.
The bottom line is if you want more control, or you’re outgrowing your shared web hosting, then the next step (before moving to a dedicated server) is to move your site to a VPS hosting plan. You are provided with more freedom and control – for example, you would have root access where you can install your own software and SSL certificates.
Beyond that, a Dedicated option would take you up to the top tier, providing full root access and complete control of your resources.
Is VPS or Dedicated Hosting Too Technical For the Average User?
If you go with one of our Managed VPS or Dedicated plans, basic technical skills is all that is required. You are able to have a familiar control panel, cPanel (Linux) or Plesk (Windows) to help you manage your services. If you opt for one of our Self-Managed plans, you would need to be a very technologically savvy user or an expert. There is no control panel provided, and you would essentially begin with a command-line.
What is VPS Hosting?
VPS stands for “Virtual Private Server”, and it gives you more authority over your hosting services in terms of plan configuration and installation of software applications.
Though your resources technically share physical resources with others, VPS hosting differs from shared hosting because it is possible to isolate multiple applications from one another within the same units – this means you have resources dedicated to you.
What is the Difference Between All the Management Options?
As you go through the configuration process of either VPS Hosting or Dedicated Servers you will come across three separate management options: Self-Managed, Managed or Fully-Managed.
Self-Managed: This option is for the hardcore server professionals. You are provided with a command-line with no control panel or backups (RDP access is available on Windows plans). This provides you with the option of OS you install. If you select a Linux plan, choose from Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS 6 or CentOS 7. If you opt for a Windows plan, pick from Windows 2008 or Windows 2012.
Managed: We include a user-friendly control panel – cPanel (Linux) or Plesk (Windows) depending on which plan you sign up for. The OS is limited in this case, CentOS for our Linux users, and Windows 2008 or Windows 2012 for Windows. We also include patching, security, monitoring, and back-ups.
Fully-Managed: This includes all the elements of Managed, but adds a dedicated team of server admin experts and unlimited server administration services
